About Chamonix Mont-Blanc

About Chamonix Mont-Blanc

Skiing in Chamonix Mont-Blanc

This area covers the resorts within easy driving distance of Mont Blanc rather than one linked ski domain. Its four sections ski very differently, so it pays to pick the right one for the day.

The Chamonix Valley has several separate ski areas joined by bus or car rather than lifts. Les Grands Montets is the steep, high, glaciated mountain for strong skiers and off-piste. Brévent and Flégère face broadly south above Chamonix town, with sunny intermediate pistes and big views of the massif. Les Houches, at the bottom of the valley, has gentle tree-lined runs that suit beginners and bad-visibility days. The Aiguille du Midi cable car is the start of the Vallée Blanche, a long glacier descent that is unmarked, unpatrolled and only for experienced skiers with a guide.

Évasion Mont-Blanc links Megève, Saint-Gervais, Combloux and Les Contamines-Montjoie into a domain of more than 400 km starting at about 850 m, mostly rolling intermediate skiing. Les Saisies sits on the Espace Diamant in the Val d'Arly, with about 185 km of open, sunny slopes that are good for intermediates. Courmayeur, on the Italian side, is reached in around 30 minutes through the Mont Blanc Tunnel and is often the shelter option when weather comes from the north.

Main seasons run from December to April, with the Chamonix high-altitude terrain often holding on longest. Geneva is the nearest airport.

What the guides say

  • Chamonix's ski areas (Brévent-Flégère, Grands Montets, Les Houches, Le Tour/Balme) are not lift-linked; bus or car between them (High Mountain).
  • Les Houches suits beginners; Brévent-Flégère has south-facing intermediate slopes; Grands Montets is for advanced and off-piste skiers (High Mountain).
  • The Vallée Blanche is about 20 km of unmarked glacier skiing reached by the Aiguille du Midi (High Mountain).
  • Évasion Mont-Blanc has about 445 km of slopes between 850 m and 2,353 m (Megève Tourisme, Snowplaza).
  • Espace Diamant (Les Saisies) has about 185 km of slopes between 910 m and 2,069 m (Wikipedia).
  • Courmayeur is about 30 minutes from Chamonix via the Mont Blanc Tunnel (Wikivoyage).
