Skiing in 4 Vallées
The 4 Vallées is the largest ski area entirely within Switzerland, with around 410 km of runs and freeride routes in Lower Valais. It links Verbier, Bruson, La Tzoumaz, Nendaz, Veysonnaz and Thyon, and reaches its high point at Mont-Fort, about 3,330 m, where a small glacier sector gives the highest and most reliable snow.
Verbier, at about 1,500 m, is famous for its freeride and off-piste, with marked but unpatrolled itinerary routes alongside the pistes. Its terrain around Mont Gelé and Mont-Fort is the most demanding in the area. The resorts also have sunny, open beginner slopes and plenty of varied village-side skiing for intermediates. Nendaz, at about 1,365 m on the other side of the domain, is quieter, family-oriented and gives a second route up to Mont-Fort and the Tortin sector, while Veysonnaz and Thyon add broad, open intermediate runs above the Rhône valley.
The links between sectors are long, and high lifts such as those to Mont-Fort and Tortin are exposed to wind, so a stormy day can cut the area into its separate parts. The season usually runs from early December to late April. Verbier is reached by road or by train to Le Châble and gondola from there; Nendaz is reached from Sion. Geneva is the main airport.
