Skiing in Ski Arlberg
Ski Arlberg is Austria's largest linked ski area, with around 300 km of pistes and more than 200 km of off-piste and ski routes, spanning Tirol and Vorarlberg. Since the Flexenbahn opened, St. Anton, St. Christoph and Stuben are joined by lift to Lech and Zürs, and the Auenfeldjet carries the circuit on to Warth-Schröcken.
The Arlberg is known above all for snow. Its position on the main Alpine divide catches storms from the north-west, and Zürs and Warth-Schröcken are among the snowiest resorts in Austria, with St. Anton averaging several metres of natural snowfall a winter. Top lifts reach about 2,800 m at the Valluga.
St. Anton, at about 1,300 m, is the big, lively resort with steep pistes, mogul runs and some of the best-known off-piste in the Alps. It suits confident intermediates and experts more than beginners. Lech and Zürs, in Vorarlberg, are quieter and more groomed, with plenty of wide intermediate pistes, and the White Ring circuit is a classic day out. Warth-Schröcken, at the far end of the link, is smaller and family-oriented, but often has the deepest snow.
The main season generally runs from late November or early December to late April. St. Anton has a station on the Arlberg railway between Innsbruck and Zurich, which makes access by train easy. Innsbruck, Zurich and Friedrichshafen are the usual airports.
