About Dolomites

About Dolomites

Skiing in Dolomites

The Dolomites, in north-east Italy, are covered by the Dolomiti Superski pass: 12 ski areas with about 1,200 km of pistes and around 450 lifts, from about 1,000 m up to the Marmolada glacier at over 3,200 m. Only some of the areas are linked by lift; the rest are joined by road and ski bus. This region page brings together three areas: the Sella Ronda, Cortina and Kronplatz, and Fiemme and San Martino.

The Sella Ronda is the heart of the region: a lift-linked circuit of about 40 km around the Sella massif joining Val Gardena, Alta Badia, Arabba and Val di Fassa, skiable in either direction by most intermediates in a day. Cortina d'Ampezzo, to the east, is a historic resort with dramatic scenery, steep runs on the Tofane and host of the women's alpine skiing events at the 2026 Winter Olympics. Kronplatz, near Brunico, is a single rounded mountain with lifts on every side and a good choice for consistent, well-groomed intermediate skiing. To the south, Val di Fiemme and San Martino di Castrozza are quieter and lower, with smaller, uncrowded areas.

The Dolomites tend to see more sunshine and less snowfall than the northern Alps, and storms arriving from the south can be the main snow-bringers. Extensive snowmaking keeps most pistes reliable regardless, but off-piste conditions vary much more from year to year. The main season runs from early December to early April. Venice, Verona, Innsbruck and Bolzano are the usual gateways.
