Skiing in Bulgaria
Bulgaria's three main ski resorts sit in three different mountain ranges, each with its own character. Bansko, in the Pirin, is the highest and largest, with lifts reaching around 2,600 m and the biggest vertical in the country. Its altitude gives it the most reliable snow and the longest season, usually from early December to mid-April. A gondola, built in 2003, climbs from the town to the main base at Banderishka Poliana, and the upper runs offer the most varied terrain for intermediates and better skiers.
Borovets, in the Rila mountains, is the oldest resort, founded in 1896, and the closest to Sofia, roughly an hour and a half by road. Its summit is similar in height to Bansko's, and broad, simple learning slopes at the base make it a popular choice for beginners and families. Pamporovo, in the Rhodopes south of Plovdiv, is lower and gentler, topping out at Snezhanka peak (about 1,930 m) with under 500 m of vertical. Its runs wind through spruce forest, it has a reputation as the sunniest of the three, and it is the easiest choice for first-timers and young children, though its lower altitude makes it more dependent on snowmaking in a thin winter.
The resorts are all within a few hours of Sofia, with Pamporovo the furthest at around three and a half hours via Plovdiv. January and February usually bring the coldest, most settled conditions, while late season can turn soft on the sunnier and lower slopes.
