About Wales

Surfing in Wales

Most of the best-known Welsh surf is in the south and south-west of the country, where the coast catches Atlantic swell running into the Bristol Channel and St George's Channel. PeakWave groups it into Pembrokeshire, at the western tip, and South Wales, covering Gower and Porthcawl. Pembrokeshire is the more exposed of the two: Freshwater West, Newgale and Whitesands Bay face west to south-west and pick up swell first, while Manorbier faces south and is the better option when north-westerly winds blow out the west-facing beaches.

Further east, Llangennith at the tip of Gower faces west and usually has the biggest waves in South Wales, while Caswell Bay and Langland Bay face south to south-west, need a bigger swell to wrap in and are sheltered from south-westerly winds. Rest Bay at Porthcawl is one of the most consistent beaches on the South Wales coast and is best in easterly winds. The Bristol Channel has a very large tidal range, so surf can change quickly through the tide and some beaches only work at certain stages.

Most Welsh surf spots are sandy beach breaks suitable for a range of abilities on smaller days, with reef sections at Langland and the powerful, hollow banks of Freshwater West for experienced surfers. Rip currents, rocks near headlands and fast-filling tides are the main hazards. Surf is most consistent from autumn to spring; summer is often small and better suited to learners. North Wales has sailing venues on the Menai Strait and at Pwllheli but no surf spots listed yet, so the surf picture for Wales is effectively Pembrokeshire and South Wales.

What the guides say

  • Freshwater West is described as the most reliable surf spot in Wales, with fast, hollow waves, rocks and rips (Surf Atlas).
  • Manorbier faces south and needs west swell to wrap in (Surf Atlas).
  • Llangennith picks up swell before other Gower beaches; Caswell and Langland need much more swell (Enjoy Gower).
  • Rest Bay is described as the most consistent surf beach in South Wales, best in east winds, with a vast tidal range (Porthcawl Surf, Surf-Forecast).
  • Langland's Crab Island is a shallow reef for experienced surfers (Surf Atlas).
