Local knowledge and community tips for Newgale
Newgale is a two-mile exposed beach break in Pembrokeshire, Wales, facing west-northwest into the Atlantic. A vast expanse of golden sand backed by a large pebble storm ridge, it picks up swell with excellent consistency. The beach is open and wild, with multiple peaks breaking across its entire length. It is Pembrokeshire's most accessible and reliable surf beach, offering something for all levels depending on conditions.
Picks up any westerly or north-westerly Atlantic swell. An easterly offshore wind cleans things up. Works on all tides but the shape varies. Low tide can produce steeper, more hollow waves close to shore; mid-tide is often the best all-round. Consistent from September through May. The 2-6ft range is most user-friendly; above that it becomes powerful.
Peaks form across the entire beach. The car park section is most popular and usually has defined banks. Walking north reveals quieter peaks. The southern end near the river outlet sometimes has more structured banks. The sheer length of the beach means you can always find space.
Strong rip currents on bigger days, particularly in the channels between sandbanks. The pebble storm bank behind the beach makes exiting tricky in bigger surf as you are pushed into large stones. The beach is fully exposed to Atlantic weather. Lifeguards patrol in summer only.
Large pay car park directly behind the pebble bank. Very short walk over the pebbles to the sand. The A487 runs along the back of the beach. Toilets and a seasonal cafe at the car park. Easy access makes this a popular family beach in summer.
Busy near the car park on good days but the two-mile beach provides endless space. Walk 10 minutes in either direction for emptier peaks. Surf schools operate near the main access. The Pembrokeshire surf community is friendly and the vibe is relaxed compared to busier Cornish spots. Weekends are busiest.
The pebble bank can be brutal on big days. If the shorebreak is throwing you into stones, exit further north where the pebbles thin out. The stream at the north end sometimes shapes better banks. If Newgale is maxed out, Whitesands (10 minutes south) is more sheltered. The Duke of Edinburgh pub in Newgale village is the post-surf gathering point.

Based on historical weekly averages
Combining historical conditions with school holiday crowd pressure to find the sweet spot.
How busy each week is based on school holiday overlap from feeder markets.
The timing score combines two signals: historical conditions quality (how good the skiing or surfing typically is in a given week, based on 5 years of weather data) and crowd pressure (how many of this destination's feeder markets have school holidays that week).
Crowd pressure is weighted by each feeder country's share of visitors. If 40% of a resort's visitors come from France and France is on holiday, that contributes 0.40 to the crowd pressure score. Crowds can reduce the timing score by up to 35%, ensuring conditions still matter most.
Scores: 5 = great conditions with low crowds (the sweet spot). 4 = great conditions with moderate crowds, or good conditions with low crowds. 3 = average. 2 = below average conditions or very crowded. 1 = poor conditions or peak holiday chaos.

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.

Flat as a lake. Save your energy for another day. Short-period wind swell: expect weak, crumbly faces. Full onshore mess. Not worth the paddle unless you are desperate. Conditions improving through the afternoon.
