Skiing in Tatras
The Tatras area covers skiing on both sides of the Polish and Slovak border. On the Polish side, Zakopane/Kasprowy Wierch is reached by the Kasprowy Wierch cable car from Kuźnice, which has run since 1936, with chairlifts serving the Gąsienicowa and Goryczkowa basins below the 1,987 m summit. It is the highest ski terrain in Poland and suits confident skiers, but it sits inside the Tatra National Park, where snowmaking is not permitted, so its runs depend on natural snow and the season varies with the winter. Białka Tatrzańska, in the Spisz area a short drive to the north east, is lower and gentler. Its Kotelnica and Kaniówka slopes sit side by side, are fully covered by snowmaking and suit families and mixed groups.
Jasná, in the Low Tatras of Slovakia, is about two hours away by road and is the largest resort in the country. Cable cars link the north and south sides of Chopok (2,004 m), giving around 51 km of pistes and more than 1,000 m of vertical. The north side tends to hold colder snow, while the south side gets more sun. Snowmaking covers most of the runs, around 43 km, and there is terrain for every level from beginner slopes to black runs and off-piste.
The usual season runs from December to early April, with the higher terrain at Kasprowy and Chopok the most exposed to wind and the first to close in storms.
