Skiing in Salzburger Land and Schladming
This area covers the main ski valleys of Salzburger Land plus Schladming just over the border in Styria. It has three sections: Pinzgau, Gastein, and Obertauern and Schladming.
In the Pinzgau, the Skicircus links Saalbach, Hinterglemm, Leogang and Fieberbrunn for about 270 km of pistes, with lively villages and plenty of intermediate terrain on both sides of the Glemm valley. Its tops are only a little above 2,000 m, so snow quality depends heavily on the season and on snowmaking. Zell am See and Kaprun add the Schmittenhöhe and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, which climbs above 3,000 m and gives the most reliable snow in the area, often from autumn.
Bad Gastein, in the Gastein valley, has four ski areas across the valley with pistes for beginners and experienced skiers, and the old spa town is a distinctive base.
Obertauern is a high pass resort at about 1,630 m in a bowl that collects heavy snowfall, and is one of the most snow-sure places in Austria, typically skiing from late November to early May on about 100 km of runs. Schladming-Dachstein is lower, with its base at about 730 m, but the Planai and the neighbouring mountains are well equipped with snowmaking and have long, well-groomed runs; it hosts the Night Race on the Planai.
Gastein, Schladming-Dachstein and other valleys share the Ski amadé pass, Austria's largest ski network at about 760 km. Salzburg is the main airport, with rail to Zell am See, Bad Gastein and Schladming.
