Skiing in New England
New England skiing runs along the Green Mountains of Vermont, the White Mountains of New Hampshire and the western mountains of Maine. The peaks are low by western standards, with summits mostly between about 900 m and 1,300 m, so the big resorts rely on extensive snowmaking. Several cover 70% to 95% of their trails, which lets them open in late autumn and run into spring.
This page compares two areas. Vermont holds the largest resorts. Killington, the Beast of the East, is the largest ski area in the eastern United States, with the biggest vertical in New England and often the longest season in eastern North America, from late October to late May. Sugarbush links Lincoln Peak and Mount Ellen, Stowe pairs Mount Mansfield with Spruce Peak, and Jay Peak, near the Quebec border, records the most snowfall in the north eastern United States, around 359 inches a year, and is known for its glades.
Maine and New Hampshire covers Loon Mountain in the White Mountain National Forest, Sunday River with its eight linked peaks, and Sugarloaf, which has the highest summit of any New England resort at 4,237 ft and the only lift-served skiing above the treeline in the north east. Sugarloaf's season typically runs from mid-November to early May.
Because the resorts are spread across three states, conditions on the same day can differ, so comparing them before setting off is worthwhile.
