About Maine and New Hampshire

About Maine and New Hampshire

Skiing in Maine and New Hampshire

Maine and New Hampshire covers three of the bigger resorts in northern New England, east of the Vermont cluster. The mountains are not high, topping out between about 930 m and 1,290 m, and all three lean heavily on snowmaking to keep their trails covered from late autumn into spring.

In the New Hampshire section, Loon Mountain sits in Lincoln, in the White Mountain National Forest. It spreads across Loon Peak, North Peak and South Peak, with a gondola among its lifts.

In the Maine section, Sunday River, in Newry in western Maine, links eight peaks with around 135 trails and roughly 2,340 ft (about 710 m) of vertical. About a third of its trails are beginner and a little over a third intermediate, with the rest advanced and expert, and snowmaking covers about 95% of the mountain. Night skiing is also offered.

Sugarloaf, in the Carrabassett Valley, has the highest summit of any ski resort in New England, at 4,237 ft (about 1,290 m), and around 2,820 ft of continuous vertical, the second biggest in New England after Killington. It also offers the only lift-served skiing above the treeline in the north east, on open snowfields near the summit. Sugarloaf averages around 200 inches of snow a year, also has around 95% snowmaking coverage, and its season typically runs from mid-November to early May.

Because the three resorts are spread over a wide area, comparing them on the same day is often worthwhile.
