About Isère Alps

About Isère Alps

Skiing in Isère Alps

This area groups the big ski resorts within reach of Grenoble. It has two sections: the Oisans, with Alpe d'Huez and Les Deux Alpes, and Belledonne, with Chamrousse.

Alpe d'Huez sits on a broad, sunny plateau above the Romanche valley and has a large linked domain of around 250 km. The Pic Blanc, at 3,330 m, gives the start of the Sarenne, a 16 km black run often cited as one of the longest pistes in Europe. The open lower slopes suit beginners and intermediates, and the sunny setting makes spring skiing pleasant but means slopes soften early on warm days.

Les Deux Alpes is a long, narrow ski area that climbs from the village to a glacier at 3,600 m, giving natural snow at the top through the winter and a glacier that is also skied in summer. The upper mountain is wide and gentle; the steepest runs are the lower ones back to the village, which can be icy or thin in a lean year.

Chamrousse, about 30 km from Grenoble at the end of the Belledonne range, is much smaller, with around 90 km of pistes up to about 2,250 m. It is the city's day-trip hill and hosted events at the 1968 Winter Olympics.

The main season runs from December to April. Grenoble and Lyon are the usual gateways, and all three resorts are reached by mountain road.
