Skiing in Bernese Oberland
The Bernese Oberland area covers the Jungfrau Region, beneath the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and the linked ski area of Adelboden-Lenk to the west. It has two sections: Jungfrau Region and Adelboden-Lenk.
The Jungfrau ski region shares one lift pass across Grindelwald First, Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen above Wengen and Grindelwald, and Mürren-Schilthorn. Grindelwald-Wengen has about 103 km of pistes, much of it long, open red and blue cruising suited to intermediates. Wengen and Mürren are car-free and reached by mountain railway, which is part of the character of skiing here. Mürren-Schilthorn, with about 56 km of runs, is higher and steeper, topping out near 2,970 m, and its upper slopes hold snow better than the lower Grindelwald and Wengen runs, which reach down below 1,300 m and can be thin late in the season.
Adelboden-Lenk links the Adelboden and Lenk valleys for about 185 km of pistes across several sectors, including Silleren, Hahnenmoos and Metsch, with a good mix of intermediate terrain. The Chuenisbärgli, home to Adelboden's World Cup giant slalom, is the most famous steep slope.
The main season usually runs from mid-December to early April. Interlaken is the rail gateway to the Jungfrau valleys, and Adelboden is reached by bus from Frutigen; Bern, Zurich and Geneva are the usual airports.
