As immense, low-pressure north-westerly groundswells track across the North Atlantic, they collide with this shallow ledge, forcing the wave to pitch top-to-bottom. A southerly offshore wind, blowing off the Scottish mainland, is essential to groom the massive faces and hold open the cavernous, square-shaped barrels. The wave features a highly critical, steep take-off that transitions immediately into a long, high-speed tube section. Due to the extreme hydraulic force, the proximity of the solid rock bottom, and the punishingly cold sub-Arctic water temperatures, it leaves virtually no margin for error.
