Skiing in Utah
Utah's main resorts all sit in the Wasatch Range within about an hour of Salt Lake City, which makes it unusually easy to switch mountains from day to day. The Wasatch is known for frequent, deep falls of light, dry snow, and the canyon resorts average around 500 inches (12 to 14 m) a season.
The Cottonwood Canyons section holds the snowiest terrain. Alta and Snowbird sit at the head of Little Cottonwood Canyon, south east of the city, and share a joint pass. Alta averages around 545 inches a year, has more than half its terrain graded advanced and is one of three resorts in the US that does not allow snowboarding. Snowbird has an aerial tram to Hidden Peak at about 3,350 m, the Mineral Basin bowl on its back side and usually runs the longest season in Utah, to Memorial Day at the end of May. Solitude, in neighbouring Big Cottonwood Canyon, is quieter, with around half its runs graded beginner or intermediate and bowl skiing in Honeycomb Canyon. Avalanche hazard is a real feature of these steep canyons.
The Park City section, about 32 miles east of the city, sits lower and generally gets less snow. Park City, linked to Canyons Village by the Quicksilver gondola, is the largest lift-served resort in the US and mostly intermediate. Deer Valley is skiers only, with immaculate grooming and a large recent expansion.
The Ogden Valley section covers Snowbasin, about 33 miles north east of Salt Lake City, which hosted the 2002 Olympic downhill and super-G.
What the guides say

- Alta and Snowbird sit at the head of Little Cottonwood Canyon, south east of Salt Lake City
- Solitude has 50% beginner or intermediate slopes and bowl skiing in Honeycomb Canyon
- Park City, linked to Canyons by the Quicksilver gondola in 2015, is the largest lift-served resort in the US
- Snowbasin hosted the 2002 Olympic downhill, combined and super-G
