Wing foiling combines a hand-held wind wing with a board-mounted hydrofoil. Neither idea appeared from nowhere. Hydrofoils had a long engineering history, while sailors and board riders had repeatedly experimented with portable wings and inflatable structures.

Bell and Baldwin's HD-4 demonstrated controlled hydrofoil lift at vessel scale. Board patents later placed wings beneath much smaller craft.
