Wing foiling combines a hand-held wind wing with a board-mounted hydrofoil. Neither idea appeared from nowhere. Hydrofoils had a long engineering history, while sailors and board riders had repeatedly experimented with portable wings and inflatable structures.

The foil supplied the low-drag platform
Bell and Baldwin's HD-4 demonstrated controlled hydrofoil lift at vessel scale. Board patents later placed wings beneath much smaller craft. Those designs belong to the technical lineage, but modern wing foiling also depended on foils that could lift steadily at the relatively low speed produced by a hand-held wing.
1990s–2010s
Inflatable structures made a practical wing
Kitesurfing and inflatable product design developed light, pressurised leading edges that could hold an aerodynamic shape. Hand-held wings had been tried in different forms before the present sport. The useful combination required a wing that was light to carry, stable enough to control and able to depower quickly.
2019
Patents record the convergence
Patent filings from 2019 describe hand-held and inflatable wings intended for use with hydrofoil boards. They document particular designs and claims, not an uncontested invention of the entire sport. At the same time, several manufacturers and riders were testing related equipment in public.
2019–2020
The first seasons were practical experiments
Early production wings, boards and foils varied sharply. Riders learned how much board volume made starting possible, where handles should sit and how wing size related to foil size. The sport grew through rapid feedback between users, designers and brands rather than through a settled equipment formula.
THE BASIC SEQUENCE
The wing starts the foil, then goes quiet
The rider uses the wing to accelerate the board until the underwater foil creates enough lift. Once flying, the wing can keep driving, or it can be held neutrally while the rider follows swell. Unlike windsurfing, the wing is not fixed to a mast on the board; unlike kitesurfing, it has no long flying lines.

Equipment divided by purpose
Larger front wings favour earlier lift and control, while smaller foils can trade that ease for speed and manoeuvrability. Boards became shorter as riders improved, though beginners still benefit from volume. Handles, rigid booms and windows each reflect different choices about weight, control and visibility.

Competition created common rules
The Global Wingsports Association announced a Wingfoil Race class in 2021 as organised competition expanded. Racing joined wave and freestyle formats, each testing a different part of the equipment. Rules allowed events to compare performances without pretending every branch was the same sport.
TODAY
A young discipline entered sailing's structure
World Sailing announced a partnership with wingfoiling organisations in 2022, and racing rules now sit within its wider framework. The sport remains young enough for equipment and formats to keep changing. Access is broadening, but safe practice still depends on wind range, launch space, protective equipment and control around other water users.
