Windsurfing and kitesurfing
A sail moved onto a board. A kite moved into the sky.

Sails carried people and goods. Kites lifted signals, measured weather and entertained. Windsurfing and kitesurfing did not begin at one inventive moment. They drew on long, separate traditions of making a flexible surface pull against air.
ANCIENT PRACTICE TO MODERN FLIGHT
A kite becomes a controlled wing
Chinese makers built kites from wood, silk, bamboo and paper. Over centuries, frames became lighter and lines became systems of control. The relevant inheritance for kitesurfing was not simply a kite, but a wing that could be steered from the ground.

THE SAILBOARD TAKES SHAPE
Sails meet small boards
Several makers experimented with standing on small craft while holding a sail. Newman Darby's surviving archive records hinged sailboard work before the commercial Windsurfer. The evidence supports a lineage of experiments, not a single uncontested inventor.

The rig can fall in any direction
Jim Drake and Hoyle Schweitzer filed a patent for a universally mounted rig with a wishbone boom. The rider steered by moving the sail and could release it when overpowered. The patent described a practical control system, not the first appearance of every sailboard idea.
BEACHES, LAKES AND FACTORIES
A board becomes a fleet
Moulded boards, standard rigs and commercial distribution made windsurfing easier to buy, teach and race. Harness lines shifted part of the load from the arms to the body. Footstraps and shorter boards then gave riders more control once the board began to plane.

Windsurfing enters the Olympic course
Men's windsurfing entered the Olympic programme at Los Angeles in 1984. Equipment changed repeatedly as organisers balanced light-wind racing, speed, cost and physical demand. Women's windsurfing followed in 1992, giving the board a longer and broader competitive history.
INFLATABLE KITES AND WATER RESTARTS
A kite pulls sideways
Experimenters paired traction kites with skis, buggies, surfboards and waterskis. Inflatable leading edges and controllable bridles helped a fallen kite retain shape and relaunch from water. By the late 1990s, boards, bars and depower systems were forming a repeatable sport.
WAVES, JUMPS AND FOILS
Two sports learn to leave the water
Windsurfers used ramps, waves and compact rigs for aerial manoeuvres. Kitesurfers converted line tension into jumps and unhooked tricks. Hydrofoils later reduced contact with chop for both sports, changing how little wind was needed and how speed felt underfoot.
THE 500 METRE RECORD
Speed needs a measured course
A speed claim becomes a record only when its course, timing and conditions are ratified. Windsurfers held the outright 500 metre record before kiteboards passed 50 knots. The record list shows alternating craft and techniques rather than a simple march by one discipline.

PARIS 2024
The foil reaches the Games
At Paris 2024, iQFOiL replaced the planing RS:X board and Formula Kite made its Olympic debut. One athlete holds a rig directly; the other controls a remote wing through lines. Their courses may now look similar, but their handling, launch and safety cultures remain distinct.
