ORGANISED SPORT

Surfing reads the same coast differently

Tybee Island is part of PeakWave's surfing catalogue.

The local record used here does not support a single founding date for the sport, so the exhibition treats its sporting identity as an accumulation of use, access and organisation.

THE LIVING MAP

The mapped place

Tybee Island is recorded at 32.000° N, 80.846° W. A surf map fixes a name to one stretch of moving water, but the place changes with tide, swell direction, wind and the shape of the seabed.
