Tenerife ( TEN-ə-REEF-(ay); Spanish: ; formerly spelled Teneriffe) is the largest and most-populous island of the Canary Islands, an autonomous community of Spain, located in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwestern coast of Africa.

1977
Work at the water’s edge
Tenerife was the site of the Tenerife airport disaster on 27 March 1977, when two Boeing 747 aircraft collided at Los Rodeos Airport, killing 583 people in the deadliest accident in commercial aviation history.

The shore becomes reachable
Three years later, in 1980, Dan-Air Flight 1008 crashed while approaching Tenerife North Airport, killing all 146 people on board.
