THE COASTAL FORM

Scarborough

Britain’s early seaside resort, re-read through North Bay’s modern surf culture.

Scroll to follow the shoreline through time

Scarborough has two contrasting bays divided by a high promontory.

South Bay became the resort’s ceremonial front; North Bay retained a more exposed character and later became the main surf beach.

THE 17th CENTURY

Mineral water begins the resort

Mineral springs discovered in the 1620s helped make Scarborough an early coastal spa.

By 1667 there was documentary evidence of sea-water bathing, well before the Victorian railway resort.

18th–19th CENTURIES

Bathing machines organise the beach

Bathing machines, promenades, hotels and public gardens turned access to the sea into a managed visitor experience.

THE SURF ERA

North Bay becomes the surf shore

Cold-water equipment allowed surfing to develop beyond summer bathing.

North Bay’s exposure, shops and events made Scarborough a central hub of Yorkshire surfing alongside Cayton and Whitby.

THE LIVING MAP

The mapped place

Scarborough is recorded at 54.283° N, 0.389° W. A surf map fixes a name to one stretch of moving water, but the place changes with tide, swell direction, wind and the shape of the seabed.

TODAY

A resort learns another relationship with the sea

Scarborough now holds heritage tourism, ordinary town life and a year-round surf community across its two bays.

Surfing does not replace the resort story; it extends a 400-year history of changing reasons to enter the water.
