BEFORE MODERN SPORT

Pipeline

How work, access and surfing shaped Pipeline.

Scroll to follow the shoreline through time

Pipeline lies on Oʻahu’s North Shore, a reef coast between Kaʻena Point and Kahuku that faces winter swell from the North Pacific.

BEFORE TOURISM

Before the surf map

The linked local overview does not preserve a clear account of Pipeline before modern tourism.

This edition leaves that part of the timeline open rather than mistaking the first surviving sporting reference for the beginning of the place.

ACCESS CHANGES

The shore becomes reachable

The surviving overview does not identify one decisive access date for Pipeline.

This edition therefore leaves that date open rather than turning gradual change into a false single event.

1961

Surfing reads the same coast differently

Phil Edwards rode Pipeline in 1961.

The break’s name spread through Bruce Brown’s film Surfing Hollow Days, helping turn one reef on Oʻahu’s North Shore into an international reference point.

THE LIVING MAP

The mapped place

Pipeline is recorded at 21.664° N, 158.052° W. A surf map fixes a name to one stretch of moving water, but the place changes with tide, swell direction, wind and the shape of the seabed.

TODAY

Pipeline now

Although the North Shore is known for its large winter surf, there are a number of surf schools that teach a beginner the basics of surfing in coves that are protected from the larger waves.
