BEFORE MODERN SPORT

Nazaré

How work, access and surfing shaped Nazaré.

Scroll to follow the shoreline through time

Praia do Norte (‘North Beach’) is a beach located in Nazaré, Portuguese Oeste region, which due to its giant white breaking waves is famed for its surfing conditions.

BEFORE TOURISM

Before the surf map

The linked local overview does not preserve a clear account of Nazaré before modern tourism.

This edition leaves that part of the timeline open rather than mistaking the first surviving sporting reference for the beginning of the place.

ACCESS CHANGES

The shore becomes reachable

The surviving overview does not identify one decisive access date for Nazaré.

This edition therefore leaves that date open rather than turning gradual change into a false single event.

2011

Surfing reads the same coast differently

In November 2011, surfer Garrett McNamara, who resides in Hawai'i, surfed a record-breaking giant wave: 23.8 m (78 ft) from trough to crest, at Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal.

THE LIVING MAP

The mapped place

Nazaré is recorded at 39.602° N, 9.071° W. A surf map fixes a name to one stretch of moving water, but the place changes with tide, swell direction, wind and the shape of the seabed.
