BEFORE MODERN SPORT

Lagos

How work, access and surfing shaped Lagos.

Scroll to follow the shoreline through time

Lagos (pronounced ; Proto-Celtic: *Lacobriga) is a city and municipality at the mouth of Bensafrim River and along the Atlantic Ocean, in the Barlavento region of the Algarve, in southern Portugal.

BEFORE TOURISM

Work at the water’s edge

Yet, Lagos is also a historic centre of the Portuguese Age of Discovery, frequent home of Henry the Navigator, historical shipyard and, at one time, centre of the European slave trade.

ACCESS CHANGES

The shore becomes reachable

To the north of Lagos is the road to Silves, the first capital of the Algarve, Monchique (spa town/mountain), Milfontes, a coastal town and port/harbour of the city of Sines, that winds through the scenic protected landscape of the Southwest Natural Park (Costa Sudoeste Alentejana e Vicentina).

ORGANISED SPORT

Surfing reads the same coast differently

Lagos is part of PeakWave's surfing catalogue.

The local record used here does not support a single founding date for the sport, so the exhibition treats its sporting identity as an accumulation of use, access and organisation.

THE LIVING MAP

The mapped place

Lagos is recorded at 37.081° N, 8.673° W. A surf map fixes a name to one stretch of moving water, but the place changes with tide, swell direction, wind and the shape of the seabed.

TODAY

Lagos now

By the 15th century, Lagos became the centre of Portuguese maritime exploration, with ships ordered south to trace the shoreline of Africa in order to find routes to India.
