BEFORE TOURISM
Before the surf map
The linked local overview does not preserve a clear account of Hookipa before modern tourism.
This edition leaves that part of the timeline open rather than mistaking the first surviving sporting reference for the beginning of the place.

ORGANISED SPORT
Surfing reads the same coast differently
Hoʻokipa became an international centre for windsurfing competition, while surfers continued to share the same reef and shoreline.
THE LIVING MAP
The mapped place
Hookipa is recorded at 20.937° N, 156.361° W. A surf map fixes a name to one stretch of moving water, but the place changes with tide, swell direction, wind and the shape of the seabed.
