A downwind run follows swell travelling in broadly the same direction as the wind. The rider is not attached to one wave. The task is to read a field of short, intersecting slopes and transfer from one source of energy to the next.

Hydrofoils supplied the lift
The engineering lineage begins well before board sports. Bell and Baldwin's HD-4 showed that underwater wings could lift a craft clear of surface drag. Later board patents and tow experiments reduced that principle to equipment a single rider could control.
27 JULY 1997
Paddlers had already mapped the crossings
The first Molokaʻi 2 Oʻahu paddleboard race crossed the Kaʻiwi Channel in 1997. Prone paddlers, and later stand-up paddlers, developed race craft, escort practice and knowledge of ocean lines. Downwind foiling entered a route with an existing paddling history.
MID-2010s
A paddle could provide take-off speed
Low-speed foil wings and boards designed for standing starts allowed riders to accelerate with a paddle, lift and then use swell energy. Patent records document parts of this development, but they do not capture every builder or local experiment that contributed to it.

Inter-island distance became possible
Kai Lenny's foil crossing from Maui to Molokaʻi helped show that a rider could link ocean swell over long distance. The run was not the origin of the discipline. It was a clear public demonstration of how far the new low-speed equipment could travel.
2017
Racing began to test the equipment
Early stand-up paddle foil races brought several developing systems onto the same course. Riders were still learning how much board volume, mast length and wing area an open-water start required. Race results became practical comparisons as much as sporting outcomes.
LATE 2010s
The Kaʻiwi Channel added a foil record
Molokaʻi 2 Oʻahu added foil categories as the equipment became capable of completing the crossing. Its records keep the categories separate, an important distinction when boards, start methods and conditions differ. The channel remains a serious ocean passage, not a controlled stadium course.
THE MODERN RUN
Reading water replaced riding one wave
Efficient downwind technique is built around route choice. Riders climb to see the next piece of swell, turn into its steeper face, then preserve enough speed to connect again. Board volume helps a difficult start; foil efficiency and control decide what happens after lift-off.
TODAY
A young sport with old obligations
Downwind foiling now has specialist races and international events, while local runs still depend on shuttles, launch access and rescue planning. Weather knowledge remains central. Wind strength alone is not enough: direction, swell period, current, visibility and the rider's ability to self-rescue all shape the decision.

This exhibition separates documented hydrofoil development from the older history of open-ocean paddling. It treats public crossings and races as milestones, not universal beginnings, and preserves the event categories used by their organisers.
