People dived for food, sponge, pearl, salvage and war in different coastal societies. Their techniques developed independently: a weighted descent, a rope for return, careful pacing and knowledge of local water. The first history of diving is a history of work.

THE DIVING BELL

Air carried below

An open-bottomed bell trapped a pocket of air as it descended. A 1562 salvage treatise shows such a device, while later bells received replacement air in lowered barrels. The bell extended time at depth but kept the diver close to one small refuge.

THE WORKING DIVER

A hose reaches the surface

Hand pumps made a continuous air supply possible. Augustus Siebe's closed diving dress joined a metal helmet to a watertight suit in the 1830s. It enabled long working dives for construction and salvage, but the hose and heavy equipment still tied every movement to a crew above.

Pressure writes its own timetable

Compressed-air workers and divers sometimes became ill after returning to lower pressure. Paul Bert connected the illness with dissolved nitrogen, and John Scott Haldane's staged ascent work helped turn pressure exposure into planned decompression. Getting down was only half the problem.

MASK, FINS AND SNORKEL

The face enters the water

Masks opened a clear view, fins made the legs effective and snorkels allowed surface breathing without lifting the face. These modest objects created skin diving: mobile, quiet and close to the water, but still bounded by the duration of one breath.

Air arrives when it is needed

Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Émile Gagnan adapted a demand regulator to deliver compressed air at the surrounding pressure. Their Aqua-Lung was an important practical system in a longer sequence of self-contained apparatus. It freed the diver from a surface hose and made three-dimensional movement routine.

A practice acquires standards

As recreational diving spread, clubs and training systems taught buoyancy, gas planning, buddy procedures and controlled ascent. National federations formed CMAS in Monaco in 1959 to coordinate underwater activities across sport, technical and scientific fields.

Living below

Underwater habitats asked whether people could remain at pressure for days rather than visit for minutes. Edwin Link, Jacques Cousteau and other teams tested chambers, houses and saturation routines. The projects expanded scientific access while showing how much support life at depth requires.

The calculation moves to the wrist

Dive tables assumed simplified depth profiles. Electronic computers followed changing depth and time during the dive, offering immediate decompression guidance. They improved information, not immunity: ascent rate, gas, cold, exertion and individual physiology still matter.

To visit without taking

Recreational divers now enter reefs, kelp forests, lakes, quarries and wrecks using training inherited from working and scientific practice. A modern dive is a negotiated limit: weather, visibility, current, depth, gas, access and the condition of the place itself.

This is the history of underwater diving, not springboard or platform diving. It includes breath-hold practice because scuba grew beside it, but does not treat independent working traditions as one origin. Depth is shown as an environmental condition, never as a score to chase.
