BEFORE TOURISM

Work at the water’s edge

Subsequently, they moved closer to the coast and founded a new settlement that they called Monreal de Deba.

ACCESS CHANGES

The shore becomes reachable

The surviving overview does not identify one decisive access date for Deba.

This edition therefore leaves that date open rather than turning gradual change into a false single event.

ORGANISED SPORT

Surfing reads the same coast differently

Deba is part of PeakWave's surfing catalogue.

The local record used here does not support a single founding date for the sport, so the exhibition treats its sporting identity as an accumulation of use, access and organisation.

THE LIVING MAP

The mapped place

Deba is recorded at 43.295° N, 2.352° W. A surf map fixes a name to one stretch of moving water, but the place changes with tide, swell direction, wind and the shape of the seabed.
