Riding a wave while lying down is older than the modern bodyboard. Across Polynesia, people used small wooden boards as well as larger standing boards. Hawaiian paipo lineages are therefore part of the history, but not a simple preface waiting for a twentieth-century product.

A small board meets a steep wave
A short board sits largely beneath the rider's upper body, making the hands, hips and swim fins part of the control system. The form is suited to late take-offs and waves that break close to shore. Its apparent simplicity asks for precise timing because the rider has less rail and length to steady the line.

New forms of prone riding
Mats and handboards widen the family
Inflatable surf mats and handboards offered other ways to ride close to the water. They shared no single design lineage, but they showed the range of equipment between swimming and stand-up surfing. Bodyboarding would settle into that space with a board light enough to carry and stiff enough to hold an edge.

The modern foam board
A piece of foam at Honl’s Beach
Accounts place Tom Morey's first flexible polyethylene foam prototype at Honl’s Beach on Hawaiʻi Island in 1971. The Smithsonian dates the named Boogie Board to 1973. These dates describe the development of a modern product, not the invention of prone wave riding itself.
Manufacture and distribution
The design reaches the beach shop
Morey developed the board as a product as well as a shape. Foam made it relatively inexpensive, buoyant and easier to handle than a heavy timber or fibreglass board. Distribution put a workable wave-riding craft into beach shops and family cars far from specialist surf workshops.
Rails, skins and channels
The board gains edges
Designers adjusted foam density, slick undersides, deck skins, rail angles and channels. These changes helped a flexible board carry speed and hold across a wave face. Swim fins supplied propulsion and control. Equipment remained compact, but small differences in outline and stiffness became meaningful under load.
Styles branch
Three ways to stand, kneel or lie
Prone riding remained the central technique, with weight moving through elbows, hips and fins. Drop-knee placed one foot and the opposite knee on the deck. Some riders stood. These approaches shared equipment but changed the line a rider could draw, giving competition and board design several related paths.
Aerial and tube riding
The lip becomes usable terrain
Because the rider's centre of gravity is low, a bodyboard can fit into compact, hollow waves and absorb difficult landings. Riders developed rolls, aerial rotations and deeper tube lines. Progress was visible in surf films and magazines, while local scenes refined technique at reefs, beach breaks and powerful shorebreaks.
World events
Competition builds its own circuit
Bodyboarding developed professional events and world-title systems through several organisations. The changing structure can make historical comparisons difficult, but it also records a sport sustained by riders, organisers and sponsors through periods of strong and limited commercial support.
A different view of the wave
Part of surfing, distinct in practice
Governing bodies often place bodyboarding within the wider family of surfing disciplines. In the water it has its own equipment, techniques and preferred sections of a wave. The rider looks almost level with the surface, which makes speed and curvature immediate rather than distant.
NOW
Accessible does not mean slight
A foam board can give a beginner an early experience of being carried by a wave. The same form supports elite riding in heavy surf where timing, breath control and judgement matter greatly. Bodyboarding's range is its present strength: a first shorebreak ride and a committed reef line belong to one recognisable practice.
