BEFORE MODERN SPORT

Avoriaz

How settlement, access and winter sport shaped Avoriaz.

Scroll to read the contour through time

Avoriaz (French: , Franco-Provençal: ) is a French mountain resort in the Portes du Soleil in the French commune of Morzine, on a shelf above the town of Morzine.

BEFORE TOURISM

Before the resort map

The linked local overview does not preserve a clear account of Avoriaz before modern tourism.

This edition leaves that part of the timeline open rather than mistaking the first surviving sporting reference for the beginning of the place.

ACCESS CHANGES

A route reaches Avoriaz

The surviving overview does not identify one decisive access date for Avoriaz.

This edition therefore leaves that date open rather than turning gradual change into a false single event.

1965

Winter becomes organised

Around 1965 former French downhill olympic champion Jean Vuarnet planned a new skiing area on the north side of the Hauts Fort mountain and the Fornet-bowl.

THE LIVING MAP

The mapped place

Avoriaz is recorded at 46.191° N, 6.773° E. Its catalogue reference reaches 2,277 metres. A modern resort map compresses terrain, exposure and access into a diagram. This exhibition keeps the underlying contour visible so the place does not become only a list of facilities.

TODAY

Avoriaz now

Avoriaz remains a lived-in place as well as a sporting destination.

Its present identity continues to depend on the relationship between residents, visitors, access and the landscape or water that first shaped it.
