BEFORE MODERN SPORT

Annapolis

How working water, access and organised sailing shaped Annapolis.

Scroll to read the water through time

Annapolis is Maryland’s capital and a harbour city on the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay.

1745

A working shore

The Maryland Gazette, which became an important weekly journal, was founded there by Jonas Green in 1745; in 1769 a theater opened; during this period also the commerce was considerable, but it declined rapidly after Baltimore, with its deeper harbor, was made a port of entry in 1780.

ACCESS CHANGES

The route to the water

The surviving overview does not identify one decisive access date for Annapolis.

This edition therefore leaves that date open rather than turning gradual change into a false single event.

ORGANISED SPORT

Sailing becomes organised

As commercial harbour work declined, recreational sailing and boatbuilding became increasingly central to Annapolis, which now hosts major sailing events throughout the year.

THE LIVING MAP

The mapped place

Annapolis is recorded at 38.970° N, 76.480° W as an estuary venue. A course drawn here is temporary: wind, current, shore and marks determine the water that sailors actually meet.
