Rhodes

## The spot Rhodes' west coast faces the Aegean Sea and produces rideable waves during winter storm events. The main surf beaches are around Ialyssos and Theologos. Mediterranean surf is infrequent but when winter storms generate swell, the sandy beaches can produce fun waves. The island is better known for windsurfing (Prasonisi) but has a small, growing surf community. Warm water and sunshine add to the appeal. ## When it works Needs a strong westerly or south-westerly storm in the Aegean generating wind swell. Winter months (November through March) offer the most opportunities. An easterly wind is offshore. Conditions are inconsistent; rideable days happen perhaps 10-20 times per winter. Short-period swell predominates. ## Where to sit The beaches around Ialyssos and Theologos face west and pick up the most swell. Look for wherever sandbars have built up. No defined lineups exist; take whatever peaks appear. ## Hazards Generally very safe. Sandy bottom, gentle waves. The main challenge is the inconsistency rather than any danger. Some rocks along the coastline. Wind can be strong during storm events. ## Parking and access Free parking along the coast road. Easy beach access. Tourist infrastructure is excellent (hotels, restaurants) though much shuts down in winter. ## The crowd Almost non-existent for surfing. A tiny local crew of perhaps 5-10 dedicated surfers. If there are waves, you will likely have them to yourself. ## Local tips Rhodes surf is about seizing rare opportunities rather than planning trips around it. If you are on the island and a winter storm hits, grab a board. The water stays swimmable year-round (12-16 degrees in winter). The medieval old town of Rhodes is a UNESCO site worth exploring. For windsurfing/kitesurfing, Prasonisi at the southern tip is world-class.
