How are these scores calculated?

The timing score combines two signals: historical conditions quality (how good the skiing or surfing typically is in a given week, based on 5 years of weather data) and crowd pressure (how many of this destination's feeder markets have school holidays that week).

Crowd pressure is weighted by each feeder country's share of visitors. If 40% of a resort's visitors come from France and France is on holiday, that contributes 0.40 to the crowd pressure score. Crowds can reduce the timing score by up to 35%, ensuring conditions still matter most.

Scores: 5 = great conditions with low crowds (the sweet spot). 4 = great conditions with moderate crowds, or good conditions with low crowds. 3 = average. 2 = below average conditions or very crowded. 1 = poor conditions or peak holiday chaos.

Spot guide

This guide was generated from conditions data. Know this spot? Submit your own tips below.

## The spot Supertubos is a world-class beach break on the Peniche peninsula in central Portugal. The steep banks produce thick, hollow barrels that rival reef breaks for power and quality. It hosts the WSL Championship Tour and is considered one of the best beach breaks in the world. Short, intense rides with heavy tube sections over surprisingly shallow sand. The name tells you everything. ## When it works Best at low to mid tide with a solid westerly groundswell and easterly offshore wind. The 4-8ft range produces the famous barrels. Above that it becomes extremely powerful. September through November offers the best bank/swell combination. The steep sandbar is key; after summer storms reshape the banks, early autumn is prime. ## Where to sit The main peak is a defined, steep bank that produces A-frame barrels. The take-off is fast and critical. Position must be precise. On bigger days outside sets sweep through. The inside shorebreak is heavy. ## Hazards Extremely powerful waves. The sand is hard and shallow at the point of impact. Broken boards and injuries are common. Strong rip currents. The wave throws with reef-like force. Not a wave for intermediate surfers on solid days. ## Parking and access Free parking along the road behind the beach. Short walk to the sand. Basic facilities. Peniche town is 5 minutes away with full infrastructure. ## The crowd Very crowded when it is good. Supertubos attracts experienced surfers from across Europe. Good days see 30-50 people fighting for a tight peak. Competition is intense. The pro event window (October) adds to the buzz. Dawn patrol is essential. ## Local tips Supertubos demands respect and experience. If you have not surfed heavy hollow waves, watch from the beach and enjoy the spectacle. The other side of the Peniche peninsula (Baleal) offers gentler options. The fish market in Peniche harbour has outstanding seafood. Time your trip for early autumn when the banks are fresh and the swells start arriving.

Frequently asked questions

How often is this page updated?

Current conditions refresh every 3 hours when the cron runs. Hourly data updates every 30 minutes. The 7-day forecast, luck factor, and packing notes are all pre-computed at the same time.

What is the luck factor?

We compare the 7-day forecast to the last 5 years of marine data for the same week at Peniche/Supertubos. The delta tells you whether conditions are shaping up better, worse, or about the same as a typical late May.

How is 'best session' picked?

We score each day of the 7-day forecast using the same algorithm as the leaderboard, and highlight the highest scorer.

Where does the data come from?

Open-Meteo's Marine API (swell height, period, water temperature) and Weather API (wind and conditions).

Does the score capture local knowledge?

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.

When is the best time to surf Peniche/Supertubos?

The best week for surf at Peniche/Supertubos is the week of 9 November (score 3/5) with low crowds.
