Watergate Bay

The spot

Watergate Bay is a large, exposed beach break just north of Newquay on the north Cornish coast. The beach is wide and long, facing northwest into the Atlantic. It picks up swell with excellent consistency and produces multiple peaks across its expanse. The Extreme Academy operates from the beach, and Jamie Oliver's Fifteen restaurant (now closed but the building remains iconic) once overlooked the bay. It offers a good middle ground between the intensity of Fistral and the gentleness of Polzeath.

When it works

Picks up any westerly or north-westerly Atlantic swell. An easterly offshore wind provides clean conditions. Works on all tides with mid-tide often best for shape. Consistent from September through May. The 2-6ft range is ideal for most surfers. Handles bigger swells better than many beaches due to the wide, deep bay.

Where to sit

Multiple peaks across the wide beach. The section in front of the Extreme Academy car park is most popular. Walking north or south reveals quieter peaks. The banks shift but generally provide well-spaced A-frames. On bigger days, outside peaks form that offer longer rides before reforming on the inside.

Hazards

Rip currents on bigger days, particularly between the main banks. The cliffs at either end limit easy exit if you drift. Some rocks exposed at low tide at the south end. Strong shore drift on bigger swells. Generally safe with a sandy bottom and lifeguard cover in summer.

Parking and access

Pay car parks at both the north and south end of the beach. Short walks to the sand via paths and steps. The Extreme Academy at the south end has full facilities. A hotel and restaurants overlook the beach from the cliff. Well-maintained access.

The crowd

Moderately busy but less intense than Fistral. The wider beach and multiple access points spread people out. Surf schools and the Extreme Academy bring learners to specific sections. Good days might see 30 people total across the large beach. Midweek is quiet. A more relaxed atmosphere than Fistral.

Local tips

Watergate is the thinking person's alternative to Fistral. Similar consistency, fewer people, more space. The walk to the north end of the beach is almost always worth it for quieter, often better-shaped peaks. If the wind is onshore here, Harlyn (15 minutes away) will likely be offshore. The Hotel on the beach does excellent coffee and the views from the terrace are superb. Check the tide race at Whipsiderry (south end) which occasionally produces an interesting wave.
