We compare the 7-day forecast to the last 5 years of marine data for the same week at Tofo. The delta tells you whether conditions are shaping up better, worse, or about the same as a typical early July.
We score each day of the 7-day forecast using the same algorithm as the leaderboard, and highlight the highest scorer.

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.
The best week for surf at Tofo is the week of 30 November (score 3/5) with low crowds.
Small waves but still worth a paddle for keen surfers. Moderate wind adding texture to the faces. Best conditions early morning before the sea breeze arrives. Not enough swell to get this spot firing properly.
Heads up: jellyfish: peak season, and rocks exposed at low tide.

The air here is 74% cleaner than the average comparison city right now.
Significantly cleaner air than a typical city. Ideal for outdoor exercise with minimal respiratory strain.
Not a pollutant. Ozone is naturally higher at altitude and near the coast, and lower in cities where traffic exhaust breaks it down. High readings here typically indicate clean air. Can cause short-term airway irritation during intense exercise but is not linked to the long-term health risks of particulate pollution.
Additive health score: each pollutant contributes points relative to its WHO 2021 guideline and long-term health impact (PM2.5 9, NO₂ 5, O₃ 3, PM10 2, SO₂ 1 at WHO limits). Data via Open-Meteo. City markers show live readings. Red line marks the WHO guideline. Updated 21:00

Tofo is a picturesque right-hand point break on the Inhambane Peninsula in southern Mozambique, producing long, workable walls in warm Indian Ocean water. The wave wraps around a rocky headland onto a sand and rock bottom, offering extended rides with a moderate peel angle. The town has a relaxed, African beach-village atmosphere and is also famous for whale shark and manta ray encounters in the surrounding waters. Warm water, consistent surf, and a laid-back community make this an increasingly popular East African surf destination.
South-easterly Indian Ocean groundswells arrive consistently from March through September, generated by weather systems in the Mozambique Channel. The wave works on 3-6ft of south-east swell. Westerly offshore winds provide clean conditions, most reliable at dawn. The wave is remarkably consistent during the autumn and winter months.
The take-off zone is at the top of the point where the swell refracts around the headland. The right peels for 100-200 metres along the mixed sand and rock bottom. Position at the point for the longest rides. The inside section is sandier and more forgiving for intermediates.
The rocky bottom near the point presents fall hazards. Currents develop on bigger swells. The tropical sun is intense. Marine life (whale sharks, mantas) are occasionally present in the surf zone but are non-threatening. Basic medical facilities in the town; more serious injuries require evacuation to Maputo.
Informal parking in the town. The beach is immediately accessible. Basic accommodation ranges from backpacker lodges to mid-range hotels. Tofo is reached by bus from Maputo (6-7 hours) or by flying to Inhambane and driving (30 minutes). Board rental is available but limited.
Tofo sees 5-15 surfers on good days, a mix of locals and travelling surfers. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. The growing Mozambican surf community is enthusiastic and welcoming. International visitors are uncommon enough to create genuine camaraderie in the water.
The water is warm (24-27C); board shorts year-round. A fish or mid-length board maximises fun on the medium-paced walls. The wave is best on a mid to high incoming tide. Combine surf sessions with ocean safari trips for whale shark and manta encounters; the marine life here is extraordinary. The local prawn curry is legendary. Bring all specialised equipment; availability in town is limited.

View Best Time to Go →Combining historical conditions with school holiday crowd pressure to find the sweet spot.
The timing score combines two signals: historical conditions quality (how good the skiing or surfing typically is in a given week, based on 5 years of weather data) and crowd pressure (how many of this destination's feeder markets have school holidays that week).
Crowd pressure is weighted by each feeder country's share of visitors. If 40% of a resort's visitors come from France and France is on holiday, that contributes 0.40 to the crowd pressure score. Crowds can reduce the timing score by up to 35%, ensuring conditions still matter most.
Scores: 5 = great conditions with low crowds (the sweet spot). 4 = great conditions with moderate crowds, or good conditions with low crowds. 3 = average. 2 = below average conditions or very crowded. 1 = poor conditions or peak holiday chaos.
