Spot guide

Local knowledge and community tips for Newgale

## The spot Newgale is a two-mile exposed beach break in Pembrokeshire, Wales, facing west-northwest into the Atlantic. A vast expanse of golden sand backed by a large pebble storm ridge, it picks up swell with excellent consistency. The beach is open and wild, with multiple peaks breaking across its entire length. It is Pembrokeshire's most accessible and reliable surf beach, offering something for all levels depending on conditions. ## When it works Picks up any westerly or north-westerly Atlantic swell. An easterly offshore wind cleans things up. Works on all tides but the shape varies. Low tide can produce steeper, more hollow waves close to shore; mid-tide is often the best all-round. Consistent from September through May. The 2-6ft range is most user-friendly; above that it becomes powerful. ## Where to sit Peaks form across the entire beach. The car park section is most popular and usually has defined banks. Walking north reveals quieter peaks. The southern end near the river outlet sometimes has more structured banks. The sheer length of the beach means you can always find space. ## Hazards Strong rip currents on bigger days, particularly in the channels between sandbanks. The pebble storm bank behind the beach makes exiting tricky in bigger surf as you are pushed into large stones. The beach is fully exposed to Atlantic weather. Lifeguards patrol in summer only. ## Parking and access Large pay car park directly behind the pebble bank. Very short walk over the pebbles to the sand. The A487 runs along the back of the beach. Toilets and a seasonal cafe at the car park. Easy access makes this a popular family beach in summer. ## The crowd Busy near the car park on good days but the two-mile beach provides endless space. Walk 10 minutes in either direction for emptier peaks. Surf schools operate near the main access. The Pembrokeshire surf community is friendly and the vibe is relaxed compared to busier Cornish spots. Weekends are busiest. ## Local tips The pebble bank can be brutal on big days. If the shorebreak is throwing you into stones, exit further north where the pebbles thin out. The stream at the north end sometimes shapes better banks. If Newgale is maxed out, Whitesands (10 minutes south) is more sheltered. The Duke of Edinburgh pub in Newgale village is the post-surf gathering point.

Frequently asked questions

How often is this page updated?

Current conditions refresh every 3 hours when the cron runs. Hourly data updates every 30 minutes. The 7-day forecast, luck factor, and packing notes are all pre-computed at the same time.

What is the luck factor?

We compare the 7-day forecast to the last 5 years of marine data for the same week at Newgale. The delta tells you whether conditions are shaping up better, worse, or about the same as a typical late May.

How is 'best session' picked?

We score each day of the 7-day forecast using the same algorithm as the leaderboard, and highlight the highest scorer.

Where does the data come from?

Open-Meteo's Marine API (swell height, period, water temperature) and Weather API (wind and conditions).

Does the score capture local knowledge?

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.
