Spot guide

This guide was generated from conditions data. Know this spot? Submit your own tips below.

## The spot Pantin is a quality beach break on the Galician coast of northwest Spain. It faces north and sits in a natural amphitheatre of cliffs, producing consistent, well-shaped waves. The beach has hosted WSL competitions and is considered one of Spain's best beach breaks. The sand creates defined peaks with genuine power, especially on solid Atlantic swells. The Galician coastline is wild and relatively uncrowded. ## When it works Picks up north and north-westerly Atlantic swell. A southerly wind is offshore. Works on all tides with mid-tide often best for shape. Consistent from September through May. The 3-6ft range produces the best waves. Galicia receives enormous amounts of swell and Pantin handles it well. ## Where to sit The beach has a defined main peak that forms in the centre. The steep banks produce fast, hollow take-offs. Additional peaks form along the beach. The cliff vantage point above gives an excellent view of where the waves are breaking best. ## Hazards Powerful waves on bigger days. Rip currents between the peaks. The beach is exposed to raw Atlantic energy. Cold water by Spanish standards (wetsuits required year-round). Some rocks at the cliff edges. ## Parking and access Car park above the beach with a path down to the sand. Basic facilities at the top. The beach is relatively remote with the nearest town (Valdovino) a short drive away. ## The crowd Less crowded than the Basque or French coasts. Galicia's remoteness (far northwest corner of Spain) keeps numbers manageable. Good days might see 15-20 people. The local Galician surf community is growing but remains friendly. A refreshing change from the packed lineups further east. ## Local tips Galicia is Spain's best-kept surf secret. The coast receives as much swell as France but with a fraction of the crowd. Pantin is the headline spot but dozens of quality breaks exist within driving distance. The seafood in Galicia is exceptional and cheap. Pulpo a feira (octopus) is mandatory post-surf fuel. Water is colder than you expect for Spain; bring a 4/3.

Frequently asked questions

How often is this page updated?

Current conditions refresh every 3 hours when the cron runs. Hourly data updates every 30 minutes. The 7-day forecast, luck factor, and packing notes are all pre-computed at the same time.

What is the luck factor?

We compare the 7-day forecast to the last 5 years of marine data for the same week at Pantín. The delta tells you whether conditions are shaping up better, worse, or about the same as a typical late May.

How is 'best session' picked?

We score each day of the 7-day forecast using the same algorithm as the leaderboard, and highlight the highest scorer.

Where does the data come from?

Open-Meteo's Marine API (swell height, period, water temperature) and Weather API (wind and conditions).

Does the score capture local knowledge?

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.
