Spot guide

This guide was generated from conditions data. Know this spot? Submit your own tips below.

## The spot Getxo is an accessible beach break on the Basque coast near Bilbao. The beaches (Arrigunaga, Ereaga) face north and pick up Bay of Biscay swell consistently. The setting is urban, with the town directly behind the beach and the famous Puente Colgante (transporter bridge) nearby. It produces fun, reliable waves for intermediate surfers with decent banks and good consistency. ## When it works Picks up north and north-westerly swells from the Bay of Biscay. A southerly wind is offshore. Works on all tides. Consistent from October through April. The 2-5ft range is most user-friendly. Summer produces smaller waves but the warm weather makes for pleasant sessions. North-facing exposure means it catches most available swell. ## Where to sit Arrigunaga beach has the best-defined banks. Multiple peaks form across the sandy bottom. The eastern end sometimes produces slightly better shape. Watch for 5 minutes from the promenade to identify the working peaks. ## Hazards Rocky outcrops between the beaches are exposed at low tide. Some rip current activity on bigger days. The urban setting means occasional water quality concerns after heavy rain. Generally a safe, sandy-bottom spot. ## Parking and access Street parking and pay car parks in town. Easy access via the promenade and steps to the beach. Full urban facilities everywhere. Metro connection to Bilbao makes it accessible without a car. ## The crowd Busy due to the proximity to Bilbao (1 million+ metro population). Good days see 20-30 people on the main beach. Surf schools operate year-round. The atmosphere is friendly. For less crowded Basque surf, drive west towards Sopelana or Mundaka. ## Local tips Getxo is the easiest surf option for anyone visiting Bilbao. The metro runs from the city centre directly to the beach. Early mornings before the wind picks up are best. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is a worthwhile flat-day activity. Pintxos (Basque tapas) in the old port area of Getxo are excellent post-surf fuel.

Frequently asked questions

How often is this page updated?

Current conditions refresh every 3 hours when the cron runs. Hourly data updates every 30 minutes. The 7-day forecast, luck factor, and packing notes are all pre-computed at the same time.

What is the luck factor?

We compare the 7-day forecast to the last 5 years of marine data for the same week at Getxo. The delta tells you whether conditions are shaping up better, worse, or about the same as a typical late May.

How is 'best session' picked?

We score each day of the 7-day forecast using the same algorithm as the leaderboard, and highlight the highest scorer.

Where does the data come from?

Open-Meteo's Marine API (swell height, period, water temperature) and Weather API (wind and conditions).

Does the score capture local knowledge?

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.
