## The spot Matosinhos is Porto's city beach, a wide stretch of sand facing west-northwest into the Atlantic. It produces consistent, accessible waves and has a strong local surf community. The beach is urban, backed by the seafood restaurants that line the Matosinhos waterfront. It is the most accessible surf in northern Portugal and works year-round. Fun, reliable waves for beginners and intermediates. ## When it works Picks up any north-westerly Atlantic swell. A south-easterly wind is offshore. Works on all tides. Extremely consistent year-round, rarely going flat. The 2-5ft range is ideal. Winter brings bigger swells. Summer has smaller but rideable waves with warm water. One of Portugal's most consistent beach breaks. ## Where to sit Multiple peaks across the wide beach. The section near the Leca breakwater (northern end) has slightly more defined banks. The southern section near Foz is gentler. Peaks spread across the beach. ## Hazards Generally safe. Sandy bottom, manageable waves. Rip currents on bigger days. The breakwater at the north end creates currents and should be avoided. Water quality can be affected after heavy rain. ## Parking and access Street parking and pay car parks along the seafront road. Direct beach access from the promenade. Metro from Porto city centre. Full urban facilities everywhere. ## The crowd Busy. Porto's surfing population uses this beach as their primary spot. Good days see 30-40 people. Surf schools are numerous. The beach is wide enough to spread out. Dawn patrol offers quieter sessions. ## Local tips Matosinhos combines good surf with Porto's extraordinary food and wine scene. The seafood restaurants along the beachfront are the best in Portugal. Surf, then eat grilled fish with a glass of vinho verde. If Matosinhos is crowded, drive north 20 minutes to Povoa de Varzim for similar waves with fewer people. The metro makes it car-free accessible.
