## The spot Kovalam is a beach break on the Kerala coast of southern India, known for its lighthouse, palm-fringed beaches, and warm Arabian Sea water. The beaches face south-west and receive monsoon swell. An artificial reef has improved wave quality in recent years. It is one of India's most accessible surf spots, with a growing local community. ## When it works The SW monsoon (June-September) brings consistent swell from the Arabian Sea. A north-easterly wind is offshore. Works on all tides. The 2-5ft range is ideal. The pre-monsoon and post-monsoon periods (May and October) can produce excellent conditions with swell but less wind. ## Where to sit Lighthouse Beach is the main surf spot. The artificial reef creates a more defined peak. Peaks also form along the sandy sections. The beach is compact with limited options. ## Hazards Some rocks and the artificial reef structure. Fishing boats in the water. Currents during monsoon swell. Generally safe sandy bottom on the main beach. ## Parking and access Access from the beach road. The tourist area has full facilities. Surf schools operate on the beach. ## The crowd Growing. India's surf scene is developing and Kovalam attracts both local and visiting surfers. Surf schools bring beginners. 10-20 people on good days. Friendly atmosphere. ## Local tips Kovalam is a good introduction to Indian surfing. The monsoon season (June-September) brings the best waves but also heavy rain. The shoulder months are ideal for a balance of surf and weather. The local cuisine (Kerala fish curry, dosas) is extraordinary. Respect local customs regarding dress and behaviour.
