Spot guide

This guide was generated from conditions data. Know this spot? Submit your own tips below.

## The spot Inch Beach is a vast sand spit extending into Dingle Bay on Ireland's southwest coast (County Kerry). The beach is three miles long, facing south-west into the Atlantic, and produces gentle, consistent waves. The shallow gradient creates soft, forgiving surf ideal for beginners and longboarders. The setting on the Wild Atlantic Way is spectacular, with the Slieve Mish mountains as backdrop. ## When it works Picks up south-westerly Atlantic swell wrapping into Dingle Bay. Works on all tides due to the gentle slope. An easterly wind is offshore. Consistent year-round but best October through April. The 2-5ft range is ideal. Rarely gets powerful due to the sheltered position within the bay. ## Where to sit Peaks form across the enormous beach. The section near the main access (car park) is most surfed. Walking along the spit reveals emptier peaks. The waves reform multiple times over the shallow sand, giving learners several chances per wave. ## Hazards Very safe. Sandy bottom, gentle waves, minimal currents. The main concern is cold water and the remote location. Rip currents are rare due to the sheltered position. An excellent learning environment. ## Parking and access Drive onto the beach itself (hard sand). Pay parking. The Sammy's cafe at the entrance is a Kerry institution. Basic facilities. ## The crowd Quiet by any standard. Inch is remote even within Ireland. Surf schools from Dingle bring groups but the beach is so vast that crowding is impossible. Most sessions involve fewer than 10 people across three miles. ## Local tips Inch is a magical place for a mellow surf session. The drive along the Dingle Peninsula to get there is extraordinary. Combine with a visit to Dingle town for seafood and traditional music. The water is cold year-round (5/4 wetsuit) but the setting compensates. If you want more power, drive to the exposed coast around Brandon Bay.

Frequently asked questions

How often is this page updated?

Current conditions refresh every 3 hours when the cron runs. Hourly data updates every 30 minutes. The 7-day forecast, luck factor, and packing notes are all pre-computed at the same time.

What is the luck factor?

We compare the 7-day forecast to the last 5 years of marine data for the same week at Inch Beach. The delta tells you whether conditions are shaping up better, worse, or about the same as a typical late May.

How is 'best session' picked?

We score each day of the 7-day forecast using the same algorithm as the leaderboard, and highlight the highest scorer.

Where does the data come from?

Open-Meteo's Marine API (swell height, period, water temperature) and Weather API (wind and conditions).

Does the score capture local knowledge?

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.
