Hossegor is one of Europe's heaviest beach breaks, a stretch of sand in Les Landes that produces thick, powerful barrels over steep sandbars. The underwater canyon offshore focuses swell energy, creating waves that punch well above their weight for a beach break. It has hosted the world tour and the beaches (La Graviere, La Nord, La Sud) are famous worldwide. When the banks align and the swell arrives, Hossegor produces genuine tube rides.
Best at low tide with a solid westerly groundswell and easterly offshore wind. The steep banks produce hollow waves at the 4-8ft range. Above that it becomes extremely powerful. September through November is prime season (best banks after summer). The wave is fast, hollow, and brutally powerful.
La Graviere (south) is the heaviest and most famous section. La Nord is slightly more forgiving. Central Hossegor offers multiple peaks. The take-off on the better banks is steep and fast; you need to be precise. Do not paddle to La Graviere peak unless you are genuinely experienced.
Extremely powerful shorebreak. The waves here break with more force than most reef breaks. Broken boards, dislocated shoulders, and hold-downs are common. The sand is deceivingly hard and shallow. Strong rip currents. This is not a wave to approach casually. Serious injuries happen every season.
Pay parking along the beachfront road. Short walks to the beach. Full facilities in the town. Surf shops everywhere. The town is built around surfing.
Insanely crowded when it is good. Hossegor attracts professional and semi-professional surfers from across Europe. Good swells see 50-100 people across the main beaches. La Graviere peak is the most competitive lineup in France. Dawn patrol is essential. Autumn midweek offers the best chance at manageable numbers.
Hossegor demands respect. Do not paddle to La Graviere unless you are genuinely comfortable in heavy hollow waves. The section north (Seignosse) offers similar power with fewer people. The banks change year to year; some seasons are magic, others are mediocre. The post-surf scene in town is lively. Arrive early in the season (September) for the best banks before winter storms reshape them.

Based on historical weekly averages
Combining historical conditions with school holiday crowd pressure to find the sweet spot.
How busy each week is based on school holiday overlap from feeder markets.
The timing score combines two signals: historical conditions quality (how good the skiing or surfing typically is in a given week, based on 5 years of weather data) and crowd pressure (how many of this destination's feeder markets have school holidays that week).
Crowd pressure is weighted by each feeder country's share of visitors. If 40% of a resort's visitors come from France and France is on holiday, that contributes 0.40 to the crowd pressure score. Crowds can reduce the timing score by up to 35%, ensuring conditions still matter most.
Scores: 5 = great conditions with low crowds (the sweet spot). 4 = great conditions with moderate crowds, or good conditions with low crowds. 3 = average. 2 = below average conditions or very crowded. 1 = poor conditions or peak holiday chaos.

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.
The best week for surf at Hossegor is the week of 16 November (score 3/5) with low crowds.
Next to nothing in the water. Check back tomorrow. Strong offshore, clean but tough to paddle into. Conditions improving through the afternoon. Not enough swell to get this spot firing properly.
