Hiriketiya

## The spot Hiriketiya is a horseshoe-shaped bay on Sri Lanka's south coast, producing mellow reef and beach break waves in tropical water. The bay is small and sheltered by headlands, creating a friendly wave that works well for beginners to intermediates. The village is developing as a surf and yoga hub. Warm water, palm-lined beach, and consistent small waves year-round. ## When it works Picks up south and south-west swells from the Indian Ocean. The bay's shelter means waves are always smaller than the open coast. Works on all tides. Best March through October (SW monsoon season). The 2-4ft range is ideal for the bay. A north-easterly wind is offshore. ## Where to sit The main peak breaks over a reef/sand mix in the centre of the small bay. A left runs towards the eastern headland. The inside section is gentle for beginners. The bay is compact so everything is close together. ## Hazards Some reef and rocks, particularly near the headlands. Sea urchins. The bay is generally very safe due to its sheltered nature. Currents are minimal. Be aware of boats in the bay. ## Parking and access Walk from village accommodation directly to the beach. No formal parking needed. The village has guesthouses, cafes, and yoga studios. Very accessible. ## The crowd Growing as the village develops. Surf schools bring beginners. On good days 10-15 people in the small bay. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Still quieter than nearby Weligama. ## Local tips Hiriketiya is the mellow alternative to bigger waves at Mirissa or Weligama. The bay's shelter makes it reliable when the coast is big and stormy. The tuk-tuk ride between surf spots along the south coast is part of the experience. The village restaurants serve excellent Sri Lankan rice and curry.
