Gracetown is a powerful reef break in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. Multiple breaks exist around the headland (North Point, South Point, Huzzas) producing heavy, hollow waves over limestone reef. The water is cold for WA and the lineup is sharky (great whites patrol the area). When it is on, the quality is world-class. Dramatic cliff setting.
Needs solid west or south-westerly groundswell from the Indian Ocean. An easterly wind is offshore. Best at mid to high tide. The 5-8ft range produces quality barrels. Works primarily May through September when Indian Ocean storms deliver consistent swell. Less reliable in summer.
North Point and South Point are the main breaks, each side of the headland. North Point is a right; South Point is a left. Huzzas is in the middle. Each breaks over limestone reef. Choose based on swell direction and ability.
Shark zone (great white sightings are regular). Shallow limestone reef. Powerful waves. Cold water. Isolation. This is serious West Australian surfing. Always surf with others and stay alert.
Car park at the cliff top. Steps down to the various breaks. The headland walk connects the viewing points. Remote with basic facilities.
Smaller than east coast spots due to WA's sparse population. Good days see 10-20 people. The shark risk keeps some away. The local Margaret River crew are experienced. A respectful, knowledgeable lineup.
Shark awareness is non-negotiable in this region. Use the SharkSmart app, avoid dawn and dusk, surf with others. The Margaret River wine region is nearby for post-surf cellar doors. The Indian Ocean swell window (May-September) aligns with the best wines (winter). A unique combination of world-class surf and world-class wine.

Based on historical weekly averages
Combining historical conditions with school holiday crowd pressure to find the sweet spot.
How busy each week is based on school holiday overlap from feeder markets.
The timing score combines two signals: historical conditions quality (how good the skiing or surfing typically is in a given week, based on 5 years of weather data) and crowd pressure (how many of this destination's feeder markets have school holidays that week).
Crowd pressure is weighted by each feeder country's share of visitors. If 40% of a resort's visitors come from France and France is on holiday, that contributes 0.40 to the crowd pressure score. Crowds can reduce the timing score by up to 35%, ensuring conditions still matter most.
Scores: 5 = great conditions with low crowds (the sweet spot). 4 = great conditions with moderate crowds, or good conditions with low crowds. 3 = average. 2 = below average conditions or very crowded. 1 = poor conditions or peak holiday chaos.

We compare the 7-day forecast to the last 5 years of marine data for the same week at Gracetown. The delta tells you whether conditions are shaping up better, worse, or about the same as a typical mid-June.
We score each day of the 7-day forecast using the same algorithm as the leaderboard, and highlight the highest scorer.

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.
The best week for surf at Gracetown is the week of 2 November (score 3/5) with low crowds.
Small waves but still worth a paddle for keen surfers. Reasonable period putting some grunt behind each wave. Onshore wind making a mess of the surface. Best conditions early morning before the sea breeze arrives.
Heads up: rip risk elevated, and rocks exposed at low tide.
