Getxo is an accessible beach break on the Basque coast near Bilbao. The beaches (Arrigunaga, Ereaga) face north and pick up Bay of Biscay swell consistently. The setting is urban, with the town directly behind the beach and the famous Puente Colgante (transporter bridge) nearby. It produces fun, reliable waves for intermediate surfers with decent banks and good consistency.
Picks up north and north-westerly swells from the Bay of Biscay. A southerly wind is offshore. Works on all tides. Consistent from October through April. The 2-5ft range is most user-friendly. Summer produces smaller waves but the warm weather makes for pleasant sessions. North-facing exposure means it catches most available swell.
Arrigunaga beach has the best-defined banks. Multiple peaks form across the sandy bottom. The eastern end sometimes produces slightly better shape. Watch for 5 minutes from the promenade to identify the working peaks.
Rocky outcrops between the beaches are exposed at low tide. Some rip current activity on bigger days. The urban setting means occasional water quality concerns after heavy rain. Generally a safe, sandy-bottom spot.
Street parking and pay car parks in town. Easy access via the promenade and steps to the beach. Full urban facilities everywhere. Metro connection to Bilbao makes it accessible without a car.
Busy due to the proximity to Bilbao (1 million+ metro population). Good days see 20-30 people on the main beach. Surf schools operate year-round. The atmosphere is friendly. For less crowded Basque surf, drive west towards Sopelana or Mundaka.
Getxo is the easiest surf option for anyone visiting Bilbao. The metro runs from the city centre directly to the beach. Early mornings before the wind picks up are best. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is a worthwhile flat-day activity. Pintxos (Basque tapas) in the old port area of Getxo are excellent post-surf fuel.

Based on historical weekly averages
Combining historical conditions with school holiday crowd pressure to find the sweet spot.
How busy each week is based on school holiday overlap from feeder markets.
The timing score combines two signals: historical conditions quality (how good the skiing or surfing typically is in a given week, based on 5 years of weather data) and crowd pressure (how many of this destination's feeder markets have school holidays that week).
Crowd pressure is weighted by each feeder country's share of visitors. If 40% of a resort's visitors come from France and France is on holiday, that contributes 0.40 to the crowd pressure score. Crowds can reduce the timing score by up to 35%, ensuring conditions still matter most.
Scores: 5 = great conditions with low crowds (the sweet spot). 4 = great conditions with moderate crowds, or good conditions with low crowds. 3 = average. 2 = below average conditions or very crowded. 1 = poor conditions or peak holiday chaos.

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.
The best week for surf at Getxo is the week of 16 November (score 3/5) with low crowds.
Not much swell but keen eyes will find something to ride. Short-period wind swell: expect weak, crumbly faces. Onshore chop spoiling the lineup. Best conditions early morning before the sea breeze arrives. Not enough swell to get this spot firing properly.
Heads up: jellyfish: high.
