## The spot Kuta Lombok is the gateway to southern Lombok's exceptional surf coast, offering a variety of reef and beach breaks within a small radius. The central bay produces accessible A-frame peaks over mixed sand and reef, while the outer reefs on either side handle bigger swells for more advanced surfers. The area has developed significantly from its backpacker roots but retains a quieter, more authentic feel than Bali's south coast. Rolling green hills, white sand, and turquoise water define the landscape. ## When it works The dry season from May through October delivers consistent south-westerly Indian Ocean groundswells. The inside beach break works on smaller swells (2-4ft) while the outer reefs need 4ft-plus to properly activate. Easterly offshore trade winds are standard during the dry season mornings. The wet season (November-March) brings onshore winds and less predictable swell. Dawn sessions before the trade wind strengthens offer the cleanest conditions. ## Where to sit The inside bay offers gentle A-frames on the central sandbar, ideal for beginners and intermediates. Tanjung Aan to the east produces mellower, longer rides. For more power, the outer reef to the south (accessible by boat or long paddle) produces fast, hollow lefts and rights. In the central bay, sit where the sand meets the inner reef platform; the peaks form consistently at this depth transition. ## Hazards The inner bay has patches of dead coral reef mixed with sand. Falls at lower tides can result in scrapes on the reef. The outer reefs are sharp living coral with serious consequences for wipeouts. Currents develop between the bay and the outer reef. Sea urchins inhabit the reef sections. The sun is equatorial and the reflection off the white sand intensifies exposure. ## Parking and access Motorbike parking is available at the beachfront warungs. The bay is immediately accessible from the road. Several surf schools operate from the beach with board rental and guide services. Accommodation ranges from budget losmen to mid-range hotels in the town. The outer reefs require either a boat ride or a long walk and paddle. ## The crowd Kuta Lombok is significantly quieter than equivalent spots in Bali. The inside bay sees 10-20 surfers on good days. The outer reefs rarely have more than 5-10 riders. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with a mix of travelling surfers and a small but growing local community. Weekday mornings are peaceful. ## Local tips The inside bay is an excellent transition environment for surfers graduating from pure beach breaks to reef dynamics. The coral is relatively deep and flat on higher tides, providing a forgiving introduction to reef surfing. Once comfortable, graduate to the outer breaks for more power and quality. A scooter is essential for exploring the coast; multiple world-class waves sit within a 30-minute ride of Kuta town. Gerupuk Bay to the west offers excellent reef passes accessible by boat.
