Pacific City is a scenic beach break on the northern Oregon coast, sheltered by the imposing sandstone headland of Cape Kiwanda. The cape acts as a natural breakwater, diffracting and organising incoming North Pacific swells into more manageable, workable peaks. The result is a beach break that is slightly more protected and consistent than the exposed coastline to the north. Traditional dory boats launch through the surf here, adding a unique maritime character to sessions.
Westerly to north-westerly groundswells from October through April provide the most consistent surf. The cape's shelter means the break works even when the exposed coast is too stormy. The wave works on 3-6ft of west to north-west swell. Easterly offshore winds provide clean conditions, most reliable in the early mornings. Summer can be flat for extended periods.
The main surf area sits in the lee of Cape Kiwanda where the refracted swell produces organised peaks. The sandbars shift constantly but tend to form more consistently near the cape end where sand accumulates. Look for the A-frame peaks forming between the deeper channels. Position on the outer bar for the longest rides.
The water is cold year-round (10-14C). Rip currents develop during larger swells. The cape's rock faces are dangerous if you drift too close. Sneaker waves occur on this coastline. Logs and debris can be present in the surf zone, particularly after winter storms. The dory boats launch through the break; give them absolute right of way.
A large car park at Bob Straub State Park serves the beach. Cape Kiwanda also has parking above the main surf area. The beach is immediately accessible and flat. Basic facilities including toilets are available. The village of Pacific City has restaurants and accommodation.
Pacific City sees moderate crowds on good days, mostly local Oregon surfers. The cold water and remote location keep numbers manageable. Expect 10-20 surfers on a good day. Summer tourists visit the beach but few surf. The dory fishing community shares the waterline.
A full 5/4mm wetsuit with hood, boots, and gloves is standard year-round. The water is cold Pacific Northwest. Check from the cliff top at Cape Kiwanda before committing; the refraction pattern creates peaks that are visible from above. The best surf often arrives with the approach of a front, when the swell builds but the offshore wind still holds. The Pelican Pub overlooking the surf provides an excellent post-session vantage point for analysing conditions.

Based on historical weekly averages
Combining historical conditions with school holiday crowd pressure to find the sweet spot.
How busy each week is based on school holiday overlap from feeder markets.
The timing score combines two signals: historical conditions quality (how good the skiing or surfing typically is in a given week, based on 5 years of weather data) and crowd pressure (how many of this destination's feeder markets have school holidays that week).
Crowd pressure is weighted by each feeder country's share of visitors. If 40% of a resort's visitors come from France and France is on holiday, that contributes 0.40 to the crowd pressure score. Crowds can reduce the timing score by up to 35%, ensuring conditions still matter most.
Scores: 5 = great conditions with low crowds (the sweet spot). 4 = great conditions with moderate crowds, or good conditions with low crowds. 3 = average. 2 = below average conditions or very crowded. 1 = poor conditions or peak holiday chaos.

We compare the 7-day forecast to the last 5 years of marine data for the same week at Pacific City. The delta tells you whether conditions are shaping up better, worse, or about the same as a typical mid-June.
We score each day of the 7-day forecast using the same algorithm as the leaderboard, and highlight the highest scorer.

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.
The best week for surf at Pacific City is the week of 30 November (score 3/5) with low crowds.
Next to nothing in the water. Check back tomorrow. Strong offshore, clean but tough to paddle into. Best conditions early morning before the sea breeze arrives. Not enough swell to get this spot firing properly.
Looking clean - lifeguarded, sandy bottom.
