Spot guide

This guide was generated from conditions data. Know this spot? Submit your own tips below.

## The spot Praia da Pipa is a picturesque reef and point break in Rio Grande do Norte, north-eastern Brazil, where dramatic red sandstone cliffs meet warm Atlantic waters. The wave breaks over flat, terraced volcanic rock and coral reef ledges, producing a long, tapering wall that peels predictably along the coastal contour. The town above the cliffs has transformed from a quiet fishing village into a vibrant resort, but the wave retains its quality and the setting remains stunning. ## When it works The coast picks up easterly wind swells consistently year-round, with the strongest and most organised conditions from November through March when the trade winds intensify. Short to medium-period easterly swells in the 3-5ft range produce the best shape. A westerly offshore wind is required to groom the faces, most reliable in the early morning before the thermal establishes. The wave also responds to south-easterly swells that refract along the coast. ## Where to sit The main take-off zone sits over the reef ledge where the wave first steepens. The right peels along the terraced rock for 80-150 metres, offering multiple turn sections. Position yourself on the outer edge of the reef platform where the water colour shifts from deep to shallow. The inside section over sand is mellower and works for less experienced surfers. The channel at the northern end provides the paddle-out route. ## Hazards The reef is relatively flat and deep on higher tides, but lower tides expose the rock ledges and create fall hazards. Sea urchins inhabit the reef crevices. The cliffs above the beach are unstable and rockfalls occur. Currents can run parallel to the reef on bigger swells. The tropical sun is intense year-round. ## Parking and access Parking is available in the town above the cliffs. Access to the beach is via steep stairways or paths cut into the sandstone cliffs. The walk takes 5-10 minutes. The beaches have no formal facilities beyond mobile vendors. Several surf shops in town offer board rental. ## The crowd Pipa draws a mix of Brazilian holidaymakers and international travellers. The surf crowd is moderate, with 10-20 surfers on good days. The vibe is relaxed and non-aggressive. Peak Brazilian holiday periods (January, July, Carnival) see increased numbers. Weekday mornings offer the quietest sessions. ## Local tips The reef works best from mid to high tide when the rock ledges are covered and the wave has clean face. Low tide sessions are bumpy and risk contact with the reef. The wave rewards a fish or mid-length board that can generate speed on the relatively mellow face. The dolphin population at Baia dos Golfinhos adjacent to the break provides regular wildlife encounters between sets. Bring reef-safe sunscreen; the marine environment here is protected.

Frequently asked questions

How often is this page updated?

Current conditions refresh every 3 hours when the cron runs. Hourly data updates every 30 minutes. The 7-day forecast, luck factor, and packing notes are all pre-computed at the same time.

What is the luck factor?

We compare the 7-day forecast to the last 5 years of marine data for the same week at Praia da Pipa. The delta tells you whether conditions are shaping up better, worse, or about the same as a typical late May.

How is 'best session' picked?

We score each day of the 7-day forecast using the same algorithm as the leaderboard, and highlight the highest scorer.

Where does the data come from?

Open-Meteo's Marine API (swell height, period, water temperature) and Weather API (wind and conditions).

Does the score capture local knowledge?

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.
