Spot guide

This guide was generated from conditions data. Know this spot? Submit your own tips below.

## The spot Canggu has transformed from quiet rice paddies to Bali's most popular surf and lifestyle hub over the past decade. The coastline offers multiple breaks: Old Man's (a gentle, fat right), Batu Bolong (the longboarder's paradise), Berawa (powerful beach break), and Echo Beach (a fast, hollow left reef). The variety means there is something for every level within a short motorbike ride along the coast road. The surf culture here blends seamlessly with the cafe, co-working, and nightlife scene. ## When it works The dry season from May through October delivers the most consistent south-westerly Indian Ocean groundswells with offshore south-east trade winds. Echo Beach and Berawa handle the most power. Old Man's and Batu Bolong work on anything from 2ft upwards. During the wet season (November-March), conditions are less consistent with onshore winds, though southern swell still arrives. Dawn before the trade winds strengthen provides the cleanest sessions. ## Where to sit Old Man's: sit on the wide, fat peak and catch everything on a longboard. Batu Bolong: the rights off the temple offer the longest rides. Berawa: watch for the best bank and position on the outer bar. Echo Beach: the reef produces a defined left-hander at the southern end, take off beside the rocks and ride the wall. Each break has its own character and crowd. ## Hazards Echo Beach has a sharp reef that punishes falls at lower tides. Berawa produces powerful rip currents on bigger swells. Old Man's and Batu Bolong are crowded with beginners whose board control is questionable. Motorbike traffic to and from the breaks is dangerous. Strong currents run parallel to the shore at all spots. ## Parking and access Motorbike parking is available at each break, either free or for a small fee at the adjacent warungs. The walks to the water are short and easy. Batu Bolong has a dedicated surf access point with board rental. Facilities including warungs, cafes, and surf shops are abundant at every break. ## The crowd Canggu is heavily crowded at all levels. Old Man's and Batu Bolong are packed with beginners and surf school groups. Echo Beach draws the more experienced crowd but is still busy. The sheer volume of surfers in this area is the highest in Bali. Dawn patrol or rainy mornings when the casual crowd stays in bed offer the best windows. ## Local tips Match your break to your level. If you are learning, stay at Old Man's or the inside at Batu Bolong. If you want performance waves, head to Echo Beach or Berawa. Don't paddle out at Echo Beach unless you are comfortable over reef in overhead surf. The tide matters enormously: Echo Beach needs mid-high tide; Old Man's works on all tides. A scooter is essential for moving between breaks to find the least crowded option. The Balinese community offerings (canang sari) on the beach are sacred; never step on them.

Frequently asked questions

How often is this page updated?

Current conditions refresh every 3 hours when the cron runs. Hourly data updates every 30 minutes. The 7-day forecast, luck factor, and packing notes are all pre-computed at the same time.

What is the luck factor?

We compare the 7-day forecast to the last 5 years of marine data for the same week at Canggu. The delta tells you whether conditions are shaping up better, worse, or about the same as a typical late May.

How is 'best session' picked?

We score each day of the 7-day forecast using the same algorithm as the leaderboard, and highlight the highest scorer.

Where does the data come from?

Open-Meteo's Marine API (swell height, period, water temperature) and Weather API (wind and conditions).

Does the score capture local knowledge?

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.
