Trade winds are typically cross-shore. Early mornings before the trade wind builds offer the cleanest conditions. Best at mid to high tide. The 3-6ft range produces the best waves. Consistent during the winter swell season. ## Where to sit Encuentro has multiple reef breaks along the coastline. The main left and right are defined peaks over coral. Paddle out through the channel. Each peak has a small group of regulars. ## Hazards Shallow coral reef. Sea urchins. Fire coral. Booties recommended. Strong trade winds in the afternoon. Currents on bigger swells. The reef is the primary hazard. ## Parking and access Drive to Encuentro beach (10 minutes from Cabarete town). Parking at the beach. Simple beach bars and surf schools at the waterside. Cabarete town has full facilities. ## The crowd Moderate. 10-20 people spread across the various peaks. Surf schools bring beginners to the inside sections. The Caribbean atmosphere is relaxed. Less crowded than mainland US spots. ## Local tips Surf early before the trade wind picks up (usually by 11am). The mornings are glass or light offshore. Encuentro is the surf spot; Kite Beach is for wind sports. The town's nightlife is lively. Dominican food (mangú, fresh fish) is excellent and affordable. The reef produces the best waves you will find in the Caribbean outside Puerto Rico.
