Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's premier surfing destination, a long, peeling right-hand point break on the remote eastern coast that comes alive during the south-west monsoon season. The wave wraps around a rocky headland onto a uniform sandbar, offering extraordinarily long rides with a slow, predictable peel angle. The setting is idyllic: palm-fringed coastline, warm turquoise water, and a laid-back fishing village atmosphere that attracts travelling surfers from around the world.
The season runs from April through October, coinciding with the south-west monsoon that sends consistent swell to the east coast whilst simultaneously providing offshore winds. May and June typically produce the cleanest conditions before the monsoon intensifies in July. The wave needs south to south-east swell in the 3-6ft range. The south-westerly monsoon wind blows directly offshore here, creating pristine glassy faces. Early mornings and late afternoons offer the lightest winds.
The main point offers the longest rides, with the take-off zone sitting beside the rocky outcrop at the northern end of the bay. From here, the wave peels right for 200-300 metres on a good day. The inside section near the beach offers shorter, mellower waves suitable for intermediates. Position yourself on the point and let the wave sweep you down the sandbar. The wide peel angle means you can take off relatively deep without getting caught behind the section.
The rocks at the take-off zone are sharp and partially submerged at higher tides. Sea urchins inhabit the rock pools and stepping on them is painful. Currents can develop on bigger swells that push you further down the bay than intended. Crocodiles from the nearby lagoon have occasionally been spotted in the surf zone, though encounters remain extremely rare. The sun is equatorial and intense.
Accommodation lines the bay, and most surfers walk directly to the beach from guesthouses. The main point is accessible via a short walk along the beach from the village centre. No formal car parks exist, but tuk-tuks serve as the primary transport. Board rental and storage is available from numerous shops along the main road.
Arugam Bay attracts a steady stream of travelling surfers during the season, creating an international mix in the water. The main point can hold 20-30 surfers on good days, but the long, predictable peel means everyone gets waves. The vibe is friendly and relaxed. Local Sri Lankan surfers mix comfortably with visitors. The wide take-off zone and the length of the wave prevent the aggressive competition seen at more concentrated breaks.
Bring a longer board than you would normally ride. The wave rewards glide and flow over aggressive shortboarding. A 6'6" to 7'0" mid-length or a fish allows you to catch waves earlier and maximise the extraordinary ride length. The best section of the point is the initial take-off near the rocks where the wave has the most wall; it gradually fattens as you ride further down the bay. Time your sessions around the tides: mid to high tide provides the most water over the reef and the longest rides.

Combining historical conditions with school holiday crowd pressure to find the sweet spot.
How busy each week is based on school holiday overlap from feeder markets.
The timing score combines two signals: historical conditions quality (how good the skiing or surfing typically is in a given week, based on 5 years of weather data) and crowd pressure (how many of this destination's feeder markets have school holidays that week).
Crowd pressure is weighted by each feeder country's share of visitors. If 40% of a resort's visitors come from France and France is on holiday, that contributes 0.40 to the crowd pressure score. Crowds can reduce the timing score by up to 35%, ensuring conditions still matter most.
Scores: 5 = great conditions with low crowds (the sweet spot). 4 = great conditions with moderate crowds, or good conditions with low crowds. 3 = average. 2 = below average conditions or very crowded. 1 = poor conditions or peak holiday chaos.

Honestly, no. Every break has tide windows, swell directions and reef contours that a global model cannot see. Treat the score as a starting point, then check a local cam.
